Internet Marketing for Beginners: Marketing On EBay

Weird Al is known for his parodies of famous songs. One day, he decided to parody the Backstreet Boys’ number one hit “I Want It That Way”. When Weird Al was finished, the most annoying song on the radio transformed into “”What I Bought on EBay”. The truth is that Weird Al has a point. People will buy just about ANYTHING on EBay!

The question is: How do you make a profit?

Marketing through EBay is really that simple and there are many people that use EBay to sell their merchandise and make a full time income doing it.

Even though people will buy anything on EBay, it is a good idea to have some idea as to what you will be selling. First, your items need to be in as good a condition as possible. Of course, EBay allows for people to sell new items, but the price is still reasonably high even though it is lower than retail price. So, if you can offer the same object used, but in very good condition that it could very well be new, you will be more likely to have a buyer. This tactic works well for someone who wants to earn a little money by getting rid of old stuff cluttering the house. But for someone who wants to make real money, there is a way.

The first thing someone wanting real profit will want to do is to discover a niche. The best way to discover a niche is to determine what you are most interested in because you will know more about that grouping of items than anyone, and you probably know where to get it. Say that your niche is music. Obviously, you will not want to sell from your personal stores unless you want to get rid of something. That’s why it’s a good idea to go to different music shops all over town. The best places to find music or anything worth having are stores like Good Will because they sell it cheap, which means a profit once someone has bought it from you. As a music lover, you know that most people will get their music from the internet, so look for those hard-to-find albums in a variety of formats.

Sure, an Elvis album will probably be in mp3 format or on CD, but there’s something to be said for a music collector who owns an original record. Therein lays your business niche. Besides albums themselves, consider collectors’ items for people who love music. What about an Elvis lunch box or a Smashing Pumpkins T-shirt from some specific concert? Again, therein lays your business. Be aware that someone else might be selling the same or similar item, so check EBay listings to get an idea of what you’re up against in condition and price. This way, you’ll immediately know whether or not to bother with it or how much it should go for.

So now you need to go and find some stuff you want to get rid of, and then get an EBay account set up and you will be ready to sell!
